Queensland has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and finding it early makes treatment simpler and more effective. At Samford Valley Medical Centre, our dedicated skin cancer clinic, Melanoma Masters @ Samford Valley Medical Centre, is led by Dr Chris Robinson and offers thorough skin checks, diagnosis and treatment close to home.
Who should book a skin check
You might like to book if you:
- would like a full skin check, or haven’t had one for a while
- have a new spot, or a mole or freckle that is changing in size, shape or colour
- have a sore or spot that bleeds, itches or won’t heal
- have had skin cancer before and need regular monitoring
- have fair skin, lots of moles, a family history of melanoma, or have spent a lot of time outdoors
What to expect
This clinic focuses only on skin cancer, which allows extra time and attention for each patient. Your appointment may include:
- a head-to-toe skin examination, using a dermatoscope to look closely at individual spots
- a clear explanation of anything that needs attention, and anything that doesn’t
- a biopsy if a spot needs to be checked further
- surgical treatment of skin cancers where needed
- a plan for ongoing checks and prevention, based on your individual risk
Before your appointment: it helps to remove nail polish and make-up, and to note any spots you’re worried about. You’re welcome to bring a support person or ask for a chaperone.
About Dr Chris Robinson
Dr Chris Robinson is a General Practitioner with advanced training in skin cancer medicine. He has completed a Master’s degree (Distinction) in Skin Cancer Medicine at the University of Queensland, is a Fellow of the Skin Cancer College Australasia, and is a Senior Lecturer in Skin Cancer Medicine at UQ. He is a published author in the field and a member of a skin cancer research team at Southern Cross University.
Dr Robinson also works as a Senior Medical Officer in the Department of Dermatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he undertakes complex surgical repairs for skin cancer patients.
Booking a skin check
The skin cancer clinic runs on Wednesdays (1.30pm – 5pm) and Fridays (9am – 4pm). These appointments are for skin checks, skin cancer consultations and procedures only. For other health concerns, please book with one of our GPs.
